Letter: Rink Story Requires Some Humor

In regards to your article “Tariffs May Drive up Rink Cost” (April  11, 2025),  I was thinking that the situation requires a bit of humor, although if the cost rises again humor might turn to despair. I recall the discovery of some tanks buried under the Rink, which ended up increasing the original forecasted cost. Now, with President Trump’s Tariffs, we are once again faced with what looks like an increase in the cost and the depletion of our contingency fund.

Then again, we have major needs for the School Budget, as well as expenses-to-come, still unknown, which makes one think that our prognostications are made for the immediate tomorrow and not the long term…

I am thrilled your paper likes to always remind us that: “On April 4, 2023 voters approved a $29.9 million debt exclusion to build the ice rink, etc. etc.”

I totally do not blame the voters for voting for it. But it makes me wonder about the wisdom, the ambition really of those who decide to lead us to spend every dime of the Town’s coffers with no prudence, caution, providence (call it what you want) for tomorrow.

It reminds me of King John’s wise words, who, upon hearing of his brother’s, the famous  Richard the Lionheart, adventures in Jerusalem, said the memorable words, “he went on a crazy crusade.”

Sincerely, (with a smile)
