BHS Sports Wrap – Week in Review (Oct. 19- Oct. 27)

Field Hockey – Fifth-ranked Belmont won two of three games last week. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, the girls edged Lexington in a 1-0 thriller. Senior captain Mackenzie Clarke scored the last-minute winning goal for the Marauders, and sophomore goalie Zoe Bruce recorded her ninth shutout of the season. Last Friday, the girls suffered their third loss of the season, 2-1, against sixth-ranked Winchester. Kendall Regan scored Belmont’s only goal in that game, her 10th of the year. On Oct. 25, Bruce gave Senior night fans something to celebrate, as she was perfect in net once again, in a 1-0 win over Arlington. Clarke scored the winning goal in this game as well.

Girls Soccer – Belmont won two of their games this week, and tied their third. On Oct. 20, they beat Arlington, 3-2. Senior captain Danica Zicha scored twice, and Cassie Greiner added a penalty kick and an assist, her 22nd of the year, setting a state record for most assists in a season. Two days later, Greiner continued her strong play, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Lexington. The girls hosted Winchester on Monday, Oct. 27, in a game to determine the Middlesex Liberty Division champion. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, giving Winchester the title by one point. The eighth-ranked Marauders are now 14-2-2, as they continue their push for a state title.

Boys Soccer – Belmont’s seven-game unbeaten run ended at the hands of Middlesex League champions Arlington, with a 5-0 loss. The Marauders absorbed another one-sided loss to Lexington on Oct. 23, falling 4-1. Jake DiOrio scored the lone goal for Belmont, bringing his season tally up to 11. Finally, the boys played Winchester on Monday, Oct. 27, losing 3-0. The Marauders fell short in their final game against Newton North on Wednesday, sidelining them for the playoffs.

Cross Country – Both teams’ regular seasons ended with a loss to Lexington, as the boys rested their Varsity runners in preparation for the Middlesex League Championships, which took place on Monday, Oct. 27. In the championships, the girls placed fifth, led by senior Kira van Kelsted, who finished 16th overall, with a time of 19:35 in the 5K. The boys team placed third. Noah Gieger finished fourth overall in the 5K, with a time of 15:32.

Girls Swimming & Diving – The girls won the Middlesex league for the second year in a row. They had seven swimmers qualify for states, including freshman Caroline Sweeney (100-yard breaststroke), junior Ahana Sharma (200-yard individual medley), and sophomore Delany Gutierrez (500-yard freestyle). Sophomore divers Grace Fagan and Cecilia Held also qualified for states at a dive meet on Oct. 25.

Girls Volleyball – The volleyball team had a successful week, winning two of three games and securing a playoff spot. The girls started the week with a 3-0 win over Arlington in their Dig Pink breast cancer awareness game. On Oct. 22, they fell to sixth-ranked Winchester, 3-0, despite senior captain Sophia Qin’s 22 assists. Last Thursday, the girls beat Lexington, 3-0, behind sophomore Danbi Kim’s 15 kills.

Football – The football team failed to secure its first win of the season, losing to Reading 41-0. Senior captain Kyle Curtis had his second interception of the season. The loss dropped the Marauders to 0-7 on the season and officially eliminated them from playoff contention. They will look to bounce back next week at Winchester.
