A longtime Belmont Public Schools teacher has been identified as a state finalist for the nationally recognized Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Ben Ligon, who has taught sixth-grade math and science at Chenery Upper Elementary School for the last 24 years, is one of five finalists from Massachusetts. The honor puts him in the running for the national award. There will be two finalists from each state.

“I was speechless,” Ligon said, recalling when he first received news he was a finalist. “I felt proud of my school, proud of myself. There are so many talented teachers out there … I haven’t won anything, but I feel like I’ve won.”

Elizabeth Baker, curriculum director of science, health, technology, and engineering for the district, nominated Ligon. About six weeks ago, he was notified of the nomination and asked to submit a selection of essays and a video of himself teaching.

Interim Principal Barbara O’Brien said she’s observed Ligon in the classroom and can attest he’s an “excellent teacher.”

“One of the things I appreciate most about him is he really gets to know the kids and what they need,” she said. “He gets them excited about science and meets them where they’re at. Kids learn … quite a lot in his classroom.”

O’Brien said the recognition as a state finalist was “well-deserved.”

“He does stand out as a teacher and also just as a person,” she said.

In recognition of his achievement as a finalist, the school organized a secret ceremony for Ligon last week. He was joined by his wife and child, students, colleagues, and former colleagues.

“It was a lovely day,” Ligon said. “I can’t tell you how wonderful it felt.”

He said it was fun to celebrate with his students—the people who make him look good. Ligon said he’s happy to represent the school.

“I have not won an award, but it feels great to experience what I’ve experienced,” Ligon said. “I’m humbled by it.”
