Obituary: Timothy McMillan

September 16, 2024

Timothy McMillan passed away on Sept. 10, 2024, due to complications related to his battle with an aggressive cancer.

Tim is survived by his wife of 16 years, Emily Peterson; his sons, Luke, 12, and Ty, 10; his mother, Lorrie; sisters, Kim and Doreen; brother, Jimmy; and countless other loving family members and friends.

Tim was born on Long Island in 1976 and grew up in Brentwood, N.Y. In high school at St. Anthony’s, he played lacrosse and was a Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Tim earned his college degree in physics at Middlebury College, where he enjoyed skiing and discovered Snake Mountain. He then pursued his doctoral degree in physics at the University of California, Irvine, where he met Emily. After earning their doctorates, Tim and Emily headed to Boston, where he took a job with Ab Initio. Tim loved the challenge of solving a good problem and ultimately was responsible for many significant contributions to the company.

Tim lived life to the fullest, always present in the moment and ready for the next experience. Many of us were lucky enough to share in his amazing adventures. Tim loved to ski, mountain bike, surf, travel, and play music, to name a few of his varied interests. Another talent was Tim’s ability to make a delicious meal under any circumstance—whether over a campfire with only tongs and foil or in a gourmet kitchen; he always claimed that love was the key ingredient.

Tim leaves behind a loving family and a community of friends built around his kind spirit, optimism, humor, generosity, and the incredible memories we made with him. Tim was a generous soul, always giving and taking care of others—a true friend who could always be counted on.

Tim’s greatest legacy was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, incredibly proud of his boys, Luke and Ty. He wanted to share every experience with them, teach them everything he knew, and instill his strong work ethic, integrity, and humility. He had so much more to share with them, and his greatest regret was not being able to be there for them as long as he had hoped.

Our beloved Timmy Mac lives on in our hearts and incredible memories we made with him. We will miss you in the years ahead and carry your spirit in our hearts as we forge ahead toward the next adventure. We love you, Tim.
