Middle, High School Students Evacuated Following Bomb Threat

September 23, 2024

Students flooded the sidewalks of Concord Avenue Monday afternoon following an evacuation of Belmont Middle and High School.

In a letter to families, Superintendent Jill Geiser wrote that at around 11:15 a.m., Belmont High leadership “became aware of a bomb threat via “Snapchat” connected with the BHS Class of 2028.” Snapchat is an image messaging platform where users can send images that are typically only available for a short period of time after the recipient views them.

“It is with great relief that I tell you that everyone is safe,” she wrote in an email to families around 1 p.m.

According to the email, Principal Issac Taylor and Principal Russ Kupperstein notified her and the Belmont Police Department. “In an abundance of caution,” the entire building was evacuated around noon to allow police to conduct a search of the entire building. Classes were canceled for the day.

Geiser noted that officials followed the protocols outlined in the department’s School Emergency Operations Plan.

Belmont and Watertown Fire Departments also responded.
