Belmont High School Sports Wrap (Jan. 6 – Jan. 17)

Boys Hockey – The No. 29 Marauders dropped their fourth game in a row, falling to Winchester in their annual “Pink the Rink” Breast Cancer Awareness game, 3-1. The lone Belmont goal was scored by sophomore captain Thomas Courtney, his fifth of the season. The Marauders dropped to 2-6.

Girls Hockey – Belmont, ranked No. 16, suffered two close losses, 1-0 to Lexington and 3-2 to Winchester, before bouncing back to beat the defending MIAA Division 2 champions Medfield on Jan. 19 in overtime, 3-2. Sophomore Mia Smith scored two goals, while freshman Mackenzie Tierney added one.

Girls Basketball – No. 24 Belmont beat Wilmington 52-35 behind 16 points from senior captain Sophia McClendon and an additional 12 points from sophomore point guard Sarah Geller. On Jan. 16, the team won its Belmont Youth Basketball Association Night matchup against Winchester in a 43-42 thriller, in which McClendon scored her 1,000th point for the Marauders. The team now stands at 5-4.

Boys Basketball – Belmont clawed its way past Wilmington, 56-52, on Jan. 13, in a game that could have gone either way. Senior captain Andre Chavusian drained a clutch fourth-quarter three-pointer to ice the win for the Marauders. On BYBA Night, the boys suffered a 62-60 overtime loss to Winchester, falling just short after erasing a 15-point second-half deficit.

Boys Indoor Track – Belmont had a rough meet at the MIAA Division 2 Indoor Relay Championships on Jan. 18, with its only points being scored by the 4×50-yard relay team. The boys competed in the Middlesex League Junior Varsity Championships on Jan. 19, and placed seventh out of 12 teams.

Girls Indoor Track – The Marauders did slightly better at its Relay Championships, scoring points with the Sprint Medley Relay team and the Distance Medley Relay team. The team came in ninth at the Middlesex League JV Championships on Jan. 19.
