Belmont High School Sports Week In Review for Sept. 30 to Oct. 6

Field Hockey – The Marauders, currently ranked fifth in the state with a record of 8-1, continued their hot streak with their sixth consecutive win, comfortably beating Burlington 5-1 on Oct. 3, with goals coming from freshman Amelia Long (2), senior captain Mackenzie Clarke, and junior Gigi Mastrangelo (2).

Boys Soccer – Belmont won its only game of the week, against Burlington, 1-0, with a goal scored by sophomore Robert Hoerle. Goalkeeper Will Hugg had his first career varsity shutout in 80 minutes of play. The Marauders, currently at 3-4-3, face a crucial stretch with games this week against Woburn and Wilmington as they fight to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Girls Soccer – Belmont dominated Burlington 8-2 on Sept. 30, continuing to show why the Marauders are ranked fourth in the state. Senior captain Danica Zicha maintained her top form, scoring her fourth hat trick of the season, which brought her goal total to 18. The team’s record currently sits at 8-2.

Girls Volleyball – The volleyball team fell to Burlington High 3-2 on Oct. 3. Senior captain Sadie Boas had a crucial block to keep the team in the game, and freshman Emma Miao impressed once again with some powerful hits. This upcoming stretch of games is pivotal for the team, as they look to maintain their playoff position. The team currently has a record of 5-6.

Golf – The golf team lost its second match of the season on Oct. 1 against Arlington, putting them at an 8-2 record. Senior Rohen McKenzie and juniors Peter Austrotas and Will Jackmin were voted Middlesex League All-Stars and will compete in the All-Star shootout this Tuesday in Stoneham.

Football – After a bye week, the Marauders aim to secure their first win of the season on Friday against Arlington, which enters the game with a 1-2 record.

Cheer – The cheer team continued to work on the routine that they will debut in three weeks when they compete in the Middlesex 12 on Nov. 3.

Girls Swimming and Diving – On Oct. 3, the girls swim team won its fifth meet of the season, against Wakefield, 90-70, improving to 5-1. Sophomore Grace Fagan led the divers with a great performance, and the team had a full qualifying heat for the 500 meter at sectionals. The qualifiers include Elizabeth Guevara, Lilly Glavin, Karen Tao, Summing Chan, Reina Yano, Delaney Guiterrez, Caroline Sweeney, Aislinn Reynolds, and Maggie Han. This is the most qualifiers the team has ever had for states and sectionals in program history.

Boys Cross Country – The Marauders lost for the first time this season, against Reading Memorial High School on Sept. 30. Despite missing their top runner, Noah Geiger, freshman Ishaan Kanagaraj came in second place with a time of 16:30, sophomore Will Olmsted came in sixth, running a 17:07, and senior captain Isaac Weng set a personal best, with a 17:52. The squad currently sits at 2-1.

Girls Cross Country – The girls cross country team came out of its bye week strong and beat Reading on Sept. 30. Key performances from senior captain Kira van Kelsted, who ran a 21:16, and sophomore Reece Bundy, who ran a 21:12, helped lead the team to victory. The team’s record is 2-1.
