BHS Sports Wrap (April 28 – May 1)

Baseball: The Marauders have rebounded from a slow start to reach .500. They started the week with a 5-0 shutout over Burlington on April 29. Junior Matt Pizzi picked up the win. Two days later, the Marauders lost a heartbreaker to Woburn, 9-8. Leading the way at the plate were senior captains Casey Regan and Charlie Tingos.

Softball : Desperately in need of a win, the Marauders stopped a five-game losing streak by beating Burlington, 3-1, on April 28. Junior pitcher Olivia Ormond pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out 14. Belmont continued on the right path, beating rival Woburn, 2-1, on May 1. The win represented revenge for a 24-0 loss to Woburn just nine days earlier.

Boys Track: The Marauders put up a valiant effort against Arlington on April 29, losing 57-79 in a tight contest. Sophomore Esmael Peavy scored 10 points in the high jump and continues to claw away at the school record. Sophomore Liam Phillips won the javelin, and classmate Noah Geiger paced the field in the two-mile.

Girls Track: Standout performances by Belmont’s distance and mid-distance runners were not enough to propel them to their first win of the year, as they lost to Arlington on April 29. Senior Kira van Kelsted won the 800-meter, and sophomore Katherine Saltus came in third. Senior Siri Iagnemma scored in the mile. The main story of the night, however, was the success of the Marauders’ field events. Seniors Joana Wolff and Abigail Healy dominated the high jump, and sophomore Isabella Fernandes won javelin.

Girls Rugby: The Marauders steamrolled Algonquin, 52-0, in their home opener on April 30. They scored multiple tries, with sophomores Emerson Leavitt and Cecelia Held, junior LeeLee Kozelian, and freshman Ruth Christensen each contributing.

Boys Rugby: Belmont won its first game of the year with an impressive 35-12 win over Hanover on May 1. Junior Shayan Rostamnezhad had an outstanding game, scoring two tries and going five-for-seven on kicks. The fifth-ranked Marauders have the week off and will return to action in their most consequential game of the year, when they visit second-ranked BC High on May 14.

Girls Lacrosse: The No. 14 Marauders defeated Woburn, 15-6, on April 28, with juniors Natalie Merrow and Maddie Tisdale leading the way with four goals each. Senior captains Sydney Mun and Brooke Whalen each achieved impressive personal milestones, with Mun recording her 100th point and Whalen recording her 250th save. The girls lost to eighth-ranked Lexington, 13-7, on May 1.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 29, the No. 23 Marauders put up a season high 19 goals against Woburn, in an exciting 19-13 win. Senior captain Declan Doherty netted eight goals to lead the way. They fell to No. 27 Lexington in overtime on May 1, despite sophomore Max Valenti scoring an equalizer with just eight seconds on the clock.

Ultimate Frisbee: On April 28, Belmont faced Lexington, ranked No. 6 in the nation. Belmont put up five scores in the losing effort. Seniors Benjamin Yoon and Oliver Poulin-Kerstein had phenomenal defensive performances, and junior Albert Ying shouldered much of the scoring load.
