Brownsberger Meets Imporant Criteria

As the primary for the Democratic Party nomination for the Suffolk and Middlesex state Senate seat approaches, I’ve considered what qualities are most important to me in a candidate.

First, and this is obvious I suppose, I want someone who shares my political views, which I would characterize as wanting government to be a progressive force for the common good. In our moment this includes standing up to the danger to our democracy.

Second, I want a person who doesn’t simply rely on what those in charge advocate but wants to fully understand a subject before deciding where to stand.

Third, it is all well and good to have the right views and understanding an issue if that doesn’t translate into the hard work to effectuate needed change.  So, my ideal legislator would be someone who can work with others to get progressive policies enacted and implemented.

Fourth, I’d want someone who is truly committed to public service. Unfortunately, in our political time that commitment often seems to be missing.

Finally, I’d want someone who listens to his/her constituents and is reachable/responsive to those constituents.

Astoundingly, in our state Senate district, we are graced – and I really mean that – by a person, Will Brownsberger, who checks all the boxes. He has been on the right side of issues (criminal justice reform, LGBTQ+ rights, police accountability, climate resiliency, standing up to ICE, improving MBTA service, supporting community cycling, as examples), mastered these issues, got results without any self-aggrandizement, and can always be reached on his personal cell phone!  This is not one’s run-of-the-mill politician. We should keep Will working for us and the Commonwealth in the state Senate for as long he is willing.

Please vote for Will Brownsberger on Sept. 1.
