I was glad to read in the Sept. 18 issue that town leadership is considering creating dedicated dog parks. We are one of the few communities in our area without a dog park, and I have traveled to parks in Arlington and Watertown so my dog can run and socialize—but I would much rather do that in Belmont with local friends and neighbors.
While I have taken my dog to run at Belmont’s fields, I didn’t feel totally comfortable given they are not completely fenced in. I also don’t want my dog bothering other park-goers.
A simple dog park (or even a few!), consisting of a low-maintenance fenced gravel area with benches and shade trees, would be a safe and sustainable amenity for the community.
The Sept. 18 article also highlighted the much-needed investment we are making in our playing fields, and I commend the new field manager on the progress. We can complement the field management plan and lighten the load on our heavily used fields by giving dogs a space of their own.
