Owners have announced that Stone Hearth Pizza, a fixture on Leonard Street in Belmont Center for 20 years, will close at the end of June.

“Running Stone Hearth Pizza has been a labor of love and the memories created within these walls, whether it was celebrating your special occasions, sharing a meal with family, or simply dropping by for a quick bite, will stay with us forever,” the Arkinstall family wrote in a message on Instagram. “We are deeply grateful for your unwavering support, loyalty, and friendship over many years. You turned our little restaurant into a place filled with laughter, joy and unforgettable connections.”

Owner Joe Arkinstall said growing economic pressure fueled the decision to close the popular eatery at 57 Leonard St.

“Over the past year, things started to go downhill. The AC unit went, the pizza fridge died; it was one piece of equipment after another,” he said.

The rising cost of ingredients and the threat of tariffs raising the cost of equipment and necessaries like glassware and dishes added to the decision that continuing the business was no longer feasible.

“It comes down to the smaller things. The things we import that aren’t made here cost a fortune now,” he said. “It’s not fair to customers to charge $30 for a pizza.”

Arkinstall, who grew up in Belmont and went through the public schools, said operating in his hometown made him feel like he was living “the dream.”

“I love this town and want to be part of it. I feel like I’ve failed. It’s a real punch in the gut,” he said.

Despite the disappointment, Arkinstall said he believes the spirit of Stone Hearth will live on, perhaps in a new venture in Belmont.

“I’m sure Stone Hearth will resurrect somewhere else,” he said. “[But] It’s very sad. It’s almost like a break-up; it’s the same emotions.”
