A three-alarm fire broke out at Moozy’s Ice Cream on Trapelo Road early Thursday morning.

According to Belmont Fire Chief David DeStefano, firefighters were called at around 4:30 a.m. for a smoky fire at the building at 2 Trapelo Road after an employee called 911. The fire originated in the basement, DeStefano added. Fire crews attempted to enter the basement but were unable to do so. The flames eventually caused the first floor to collapse.

“As they were attempting to get into the basement, the floor became unstable. They needed to evacuate the building immediately, after which the floor immediately failed,” DeStefano said.

Moozy’s opened about 10 years ago, serving a variety of ice creams, burgers, and more.

“It’s just really, really sad, but the community keeps showing up to support us,” said manager Becca Pizzi.

The shop was once home to a Brigham’s before Dante Muzzioli bought it about 10 years ago.

“It’s been here for such a long time,” said resident Carol Malfa. “Being in the town for as long as I have, you know, it’s hard to see things like this happen.”

“It’s especially [difficult] knowing a lot of the young employees here and how they feel about this,” added Lena Malfa, Carol’s granddaughter.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury but was able to stay on scene, according to fire officials. Belmont received mutual aid support from Watertown, Arlington, Cambridge, and Waltham, as well as Pro EMS.

“We really appreciate that. All the help was instrumental,” DeStefano said.

Damage to the neighboring businesses is currently unknown.

The fire remains under investigation.

This is a developing story.
