Fire Damages Pleasant Street Home

A two-alarm fire broke out in a home on Pleasant Street on Sunday, snarling traffic and bringing emergency responders from Belmont and neighboring towns to battle the blaze.

Capt. Robert Wollner, the Belmont Fire Department shift commander who led the firefighting efforts on Sunday, said no one was injured in the blaze. Two residents who were home at the time escaped the house before firefighters arrived.

Wollner said firefighters received a 911 call just before 2 p.m. reporting a structure fire at 592 Pleasant St. When first responders arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the historic house and called for a second alarm.

Wollner said the second alarm brought the entire Belmont Fire Department to the scene, along with firefighters from Cambridge, Arlington and Waltham, and an ambulance from Professional EMS. Other units from Waltham stood by to cover emergencies in the rest of Belmont.

Firefighters worked on the scene for about three hours, during which Pleasant Street was blocked by police from Leonard Street to Concord Avenue. Traffic was redirected through Belmont Center. The fire, which spread up from the second floor to the attic, caused smoke and water damage, leaving the house uninhabitable for the time being, Wollner said.

According to Wollner, the weather, temperatures in the mid-20s and a 15-mile-per-hour wind, did not impact firefighting efforts.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear and remains under investigation, Wollner added.
