I am a longtime Belmont resident and Town Meeting member representing Precinct 8. I write today to express my wholehearted support for Daniel Lander to be our next state senator. I have had multiple opportunities over this campaign to meet and talk with Daniel and am extremely impressed by his intelligence, and the knowledge and experience he has gained from his years of advocacy work on issues such as criminal justice reform, promoting civil rights and democratic engagement. In talking with Daniel, it is clear that he is deeply committed to making needed changes here in Massachusetts such as creating affordable housing for working families, improving access to education and expanding public transportation. Daniel’s mission is to make life in our state better and more affordable for regular people.
Most important: Daniel will bring a sense of urgency to our sleepy legislature on Beacon Hill. Yes, Massachusetts has a reputation as one of the nation’s most progressive states. But many of the laws our state is most celebrated for passing – from the “Millionaire’s Tax” to our automotive right to repair – are the product of ballot measures passed directly by voters, not any action taken by Beacon Hill. The nine additional ballot measures on this November’s ballot are more evidence of our state legislature’s failure to act and the wide gap between the needs of voters and the priorities of the lawmakers we elect.
Electing a candidate like Daniel with policy experience, fresh thinking, and an urgency to make positive change will give Belmont a strong advocate and send a message to Beacon Hill that change is needed. It is the best way to get our government working for us and improve the quality of life and the future prospects for our town. Please join me in voting for Daniel on Sept. 1.
