We must continue to do everything we can to generate power sustainably here in Belmont.
Many residents have installed solar arrays on their homes, which makes a big difference in electrical bills and reduces impacts to the environment. Municipal buildings are also contributing in this way. However, not every homeowner can install solar systems, due to the amount of sunlight available, a slate roof, or a small property.
It is essential that the town establish a solar generation system that will help to reduce rates and improve sustainability. If the town wishes to put a solar array at the transfer station, I believe it is the responsibility of the town to cap the property first. I say this because the mitigation that needs to occur there is the responsibility of all of us as current and previous residents of the town. It is not the responsibility of all current rate payers.
The proper role of government here is to clear the way for an important development that will help all the residents of the town. As the Light Department is a part of the town itself, this crucial step should not be looked upon as a subsidy to industry. Quite the contrary. Ratepayers should not be burdened by an additional charge for mitigation. On a practical level, we know that electrical rates are rising very quickly. And due to political forces, some power generation efforts have been hampered. It is essential to get this project started as soon as possible.
