On April 2 Belmont will elect two School Committee members. I hope Belmont voters will cast one of their votes for Matt Kraft. Matt will bring his expertise from his day job as a professor of education and economics to our school committee. His research and teaching areas include driving instructional improvement and student achievement through teacher coaching, policies to strengthen the teacher workforce, building strong relationships between the School Committee and the community, and collective bargaining with the teacher’s union. Beyond his academic interests in education, he shares the goal of the Belmont community to keep our schools the “jewel in the crown.”
Matt is committed to overseeing a fiscally responsible school budget, advocating for better in-district special education services, promoting increased educational coaching and curriculum consistency, and championing continual improvements in communication and transparency by the school department.
Matt’s recent experience living abroad with his family, where his children attended school in another language in a totally different system, gives him a unique perspective on certain student challenges. He appreciated the welcoming environment and the communication between the school and his family and will encourage this in Belmont.
Matt believes deeply in public education. He looks forward to applying his insights to best
practices for 21st-century education to keep moving the Belmont schools forward with strong
outcomes for all students.
