Letter: Support a ‘Thoughtful Approach’

We are strong supporters of the overlay as a thoughtful approach to increase housing options and expand its commercial tax base.

A couple of weeks ago, we toured the new, beautiful library and felt enormous pride for our community. We more than survived the substantial construction along Concord Avenue; our town is better for its investments.

As frequent local shoppers, purchasing our books at Belmont Books, buying pizza, ice cream, clothes, toys, and getting acupuncture, it’s sad for us to see another store fall victim to poor foot traffic and the empty storefronts remain unused for years.

We understand we won’t see the impact of a larger commercial tax base in the next few years. Our children graduated from Belmont High and left town many years ago, but we supported the school complex, ice rink, and library, knowing that these are generational investments, and these needed improvements will benefit future generations.

We’ve happily volunteered for Belmont–Linda was a school committee member, executive board member of the Foundation for Belmont Education, and current chair of the Belmont Democratic Town Committee– and we have been Town Meeting members for many years.

We are excited that we can have more residential units, an invigorated town center, and a commercial tax base that will someday ease the burden on residents.
