David Rees Loveluck, known to friends as Dave, 70, of Kendall Gardens in Belmont, passed away peacefully on Aug. 24, 2026, at home surrounded by his wife, Joanna and his sons Owen and Elliot. His passing follows a three-year battle with cancer. Dave was deeply loved and will be missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and many others whose lives he touched.
He was a kind and thoughtful person who always put other people before himself. Dave cared deeply about his family, the environment, social justice, and the natural world.
Dave was born in 1956 in Egham, in southeast England. He had many fond memories of childhood summers spent with his parents and three older siblings, Margaret, Gwyneth, and John.
As a young adult, Dave studied pure mathematics at the University of Bristol and later earned a master’s in algebraic topology from the University of Liverpool. He began his career as a programmer at British Telecom, where he met his wife, Joanna. Outside work, Dave enjoyed competing in rugby, bridge, and sailing.
Before settling in the United States, Dave and Joanna spent two years backpacking through Asia, Africa, and the Americas. He often described these as some of the greatest adventures of his life. He loved the crowded buses, shared taxis, questionable street food, wildlife, historic sites, and especially the people they met along the way.
After a brief return to London, Dave and Joanna moved to Massachusetts in 1994, and Belmont became home for nearly three decades.
He was a devoted father and an enthusiastic part of the Belmont community. He coached Belmont Soccer throughout the years that Owen and Elliot played, enjoying not just the games but being part of their teams and watching the boys develop. He loved cheering them on and later enjoyed watching them play rugby at Belmont High School and Northeastern University.
Dave spent 27 years at InterSystems Corporation, working on hospital database systems used around the world, finding his niche in system performance analysis. He loved his work for his ability to be useful to others and to interact with so many smart and capable people.
Dave will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, humor, and unwavering integrity. He cared deeply about the people around him and about the wider world, and he had a wonderful ability to find interest and enjoyment in both great adventures and ordinary moments.
