Edward (Eddie) Barry Doctoroff, 76, passed away July 23 at home in Margate, Florida, with his beloved wife, Christina Anderson Doctoroff, at his side.
Eddie was born Feb. 5, 1950, in Cambridge, son of Annie Zeichick and Isadore “Diddle” Doctoroff, and had lived in Winthrop and Belmont.
In addition to his wife, he also leaves behind his much-loved son, Max Doctoroff and his wife Carolyn Ryan Doctoroff, of Dedham; adored daughter, Jane Doctoroff and husband, Nicholas Skelly Harper, and beloved grandchildren, Isadore (Izzy) and Otto of Bethesda, Maryland; as well as Eddie’s brother and sister-in-law, Richard (Dickie) Doctoroff and Elissa Matross of San Francisco, California; many adored nieces, nephews, and cousins locally and beyond, and his cherished grand-dog, Chester.
Eddie was a beloved fixture in and around Harvard Square. What began as a part-time job while at Belmont High School and then Bentley College unexpectedly became a lifelong career at Harvard University’s Widener Library, where for 43 years he served as head of circulation and later director of administrative services. Admired for his integrity, sense of humor, and approachability, he cherished the variety of people he worked with as much as those he befriended throughout his life.
Among the many students, faculty, and visiting scholars Eddie took pride in assisting during his tenure at Widener, he gained both praise and lifelong friendships with everyone from Cambridge Police Officers to a Nobel Prize-winning poet.
Eddie served with passion on the Harvard University Employees Credit Union Board of Directors for 37 years, including four years as chairman and vice chairman.
In addition to his many years at Harvard, he was also a beloved bartender at the One Potato, Two Potato bar in Harvard Square, known for his generous pours and gregarious nature. After his Harvard years, Eddie worked seasonally at the Leo J. Martin Golf Course, which he loved both for the golf and the people.
The Doctoroff family joined The Lexington Ski Club in North Woodstock, New Hampshire in 1989 and share many happy memories of skiing, snowboarding, hiking, swimming, and golf.
Never missing an opportunity to attend a live concert, try a new restaurant, or catch the races at Saratoga, Eddie’s oversized and generous spirit will leave an enormous void for all who loved him.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, Aug. 15 at 1 p.m. at The Winthrop Arms, 130 Grovers Ave., Winthrop. All are welcome.
