Obituary: John L. Sullivan, Jr.

John Leo Sullivan, Jr, 77, of Belmont, died Dec. 10.

He was born on March 24, 1948, in Cambridge and lived most of his life in Belmont. He is survived by his brother, Tom (Kathy) Sullivan; his sister, Marianne (Paul) McAuliffe; his sister-in-law, Maureen Sullivan; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Betty Sullivan, and his siblings, Susan Sullivan and Peter Sullivan.

Affectionately known as Johnny Boy, he was a simple man with a kind heart and a quietly funny spirit. He experienced the world a little differently, but always honestly, and those who took the time to truly know him were rewarded with moments of unexpected humor and genuine affection.

Johnny was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan and followed them with unwavering loyalty. Some of his greatest joys were found in life’s familiar comforts—listening to Donny and Marie Osmond, winning the coverall at Bingo, and enthusiastically Google-searching anything and everything on his computer. He knew exactly what he liked—and what he didn’t. Most notably, he held a lifelong and unapologetic dislike of Jerry Vale.

Quirky and wonderfully himself, Johnny had a way of making people smile without even trying. An eternal optimist, his favorite saying was, “It could happen.” Through his gentle presence, he taught those around him patience, acceptance, and the quiet beauty of simplicity.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
