Tony Wiriadjaja, 84, of Belmont, formerly of Boston, passed away on April 16, 2025.
Born on June 21, 1940, in Padang, Indonesia, Tony had a natural gift for language and became fluent in English, Dutch, and Bahasa Indonesia. He spent his early years traveling across Asia as a translator. He eventually settled in Jakarta, where he met his wife, Irma Hartini. They married in 1967 and remained devoted partners for the rest of his life. They made Boston their home in the early 1990s and became U.S. citizens soon after.
Tony worked proudly as a U.S. Postal Service clerk until retiring in 2015.
He spent his final years in Belmont, where he enjoyed quiet walks, watching his beloved wife tend the garden, and occasionally treating himself to a favorite local delicacy. He was a humble and well-loved presence at the heart of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Hartini, five children: Agatha Hirst of Belmont and her husband Don Hirst, Josephine Wiriadjaja of Allston and her husband Robert Sipayung, Leo Wiriadjaja of Sumatra and wife Lisa Matthews, Joseph Wiriadjaja of Weymouth and wife Mei Tjoa, Antonius Wiriadjaja of Manhattan, and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at Highland Meadow Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to dementia research or to Tufts Medical Center in Tony’s memory.
