It’s common knowledge that ice cream is essential to sustain life on Earth. So, I was disappointed and confused when I read about obstacles delaying the opening of a temporary Moozy’s site.
My hopes began to rise when I saw the tastefully painted shipping container parked near the construction site. With the addition of readily available wheels, I wondered: could I be looking at a Moozy’s ice-cream truck! Perhaps the permit process would be easier and quicker if the town officials declared the container to be an ice cream truck instead of an Emporium?
Owner Dante Muzzioli mentioned several features shared with ice-cream trucks: there is no food plan, no food preparation, no restroom, and essentially no plumbing. Perhaps water needed for hand washing could be provided from a 10-gallon bottle above a small sink. Wastewater could drain from the sink into an empty 10-gallon bottle below the sink. If adopted, the wastewater bottle would be removed and emptied at the end of the workday, thus avoiding permits needed to use Belmont’s sewer system.
Path Forward:
• Declare that Moozy’s shipping container with wheels is actually a “truck”
• Waive the requirement to move the ice-cream “truck” every 20 minutes.
Future Possibility:
• To relieve the inevitable parking problem during construction, Muzzioli could consider contacting Watertown and ask if the unused MBTA bus turnaround next to the Belmont St intersection can be used temporarily for short-term parking.
