Pumpkins for Compost
Residents are invited to bring their Halloween pumpkins to Town Hall on Sunday, Nov. 3, where volunteers will be collecting them for compost.
The event is scheduled to run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Donations of coins, dollars and gift cards will be accepted to benefit Belmont Helps.
Town Hires Director of Senior Services and Programs
As part of an update to the Select Board Monday night, Karen Donelan named Marina Kirsanova as the latest hire at the Council on Aging.
Kirsanova, who comes to Belmont from a position in Watertown, is expected to start the week of Nov. 3.
Donelan said she fills both Town Administrator Patrice Garvin’s goals of having someone with municipal experience and the COA’s goal of having someone who is “well-versed in building effective senior programming.” She also has social work training, Donelan said.
Donelan said both she and Council on Aging member Judy Morrison took part in the final interviews.
“She seemed to be the perfect candidate,” said Select Board Chair Elizabeth Dionne.
Select Board Approves Appointments for Senior Tax Relief Working Group
Geoffrey Lubien, Mark Paollilo, Kathy Keohane, Aaron Pikcilingis, Dan Dargon, Jennifer Hewitt, and Marsha Semuels were all formally appointed to serve on the recently formed committee.
“This is something that’s been five years in the making,” said Dionne. “We’re not at the end, but we’re at the beginning of the end.
Select Board Approves Request for Tree Lighting
Appearing before the Select Board Monday night, Deran Muckjian said the event will be similar, if not the same, to years past.
Santa Claus will be in attendance, he said.
The event, hosted by the Belmont Center Business Association, will take place on Dec. 5 from 5:45 to 8:00 p.m. and will require the temporary closure of Leonard Street.
“It’s a great event,” said Select Board Chair Elizabeth Dionne. “I think people look forward to it every year.”
Select Board Supports Belmont Food Collaborative Request for New Storage Shed
Hal Shubin, chair of the Market Committee for the Belmont Farmers’ Market, appeared before the Select Board Monday night asking for a new storage shed at the Claflin Street Municipal Lot.
“We’ve added vendors, another community tent, and food assistance is growing,” Shubin said. “Frankly, we’re just running out of space.”
He explained that for several years, the Select Board has allowed some on-site storage for the weekly event, but with the market’s growth, more storage space is needed. This shed would replace the current storage system.
The committee is hopeful to acquire the shed through a state grant.
Town Administrator Patrice Garvin confirmed the plan would fit within current zoning guidelines.
Accept $1,500 Donation for the Economic Development Committee
The donation, offered by Number 1 Taste and Hanami, will benefit the Economic Development’s fall networking event at the Belmont Media Center on Nov. 12.
