If you catch sight of Elvis, Waldo, and, appropriately, Forrest Gump running past you on Sunday don’t be surprised – they’re just helping raise funds for the Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE) during the annual Halloween Apple Run.
“There are so many great costumes,” said Lyn Hamer, FBE administrator.
Although dressing up is not required, in previous years there have been four-legged participants disguised as Superman and a lion, among other characters.
FBE, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization founded in 1993, held its first run in 2013. The event has been growing ever since.
“It’s probably our biggest community event,” said Hamer.
There are two routes – a 5K and a 2K – starting from Belmont High School’s track, so seasoned runners and novices will feel comfortable.
“I have always loved the environment at these kinds of road races,” said Kelly Moriarty, co-chairwoman of the event. “[It’s] joyful and energetic.”
She said there is still time for people to sign up and volunteer or to register for the run.
In the past two years, between 800 and 900 registered runners pounded the pavement. Money is raised from the Halloween event’s registration fees and sponsors. From the total amount raised, $5,000 is earmarked for physical education needs and programs. Anything over the $5,000 goes to the FBE’s general fund. Hamer said that last year, the event raised $25,500.
According to FBE, money is awarded “for a diverse array of projects … in all school curriculum areas, special initiatives, and professional development.”
“It’s a really fun way to get everyone together for a really good cause,” Hamer said.
