Vote Looms on Belmont’s Dog Freedom

The Recreation Commission is meeting Monday night to discuss and possibly vote on proposed changes to the town’s off-leash dog program.

While Belmont doesn’t have any designated dog parks, dogs can run off-leash at Town Field, Grove Street Field, Winn Brook Field, and Pequossette (PQ) Park if their owners buy a $50 annual permit from the Recreation Department.

The Commission had planned to take up the issue in August, but canceled the meeting after The Belmont Voice reported the entire program could be voted down amid concerns of untended animal droppings, dug-up fields and dog-bite incidents.

The Recreation Department did not respond to repeated requests for comments ahead of tonight’s meeting, but in an email to residents last week, wrote: “These proposed changes follow months of collaboration from residents and staff alike and the Recreation Commission is looking forward to discussing the updated proposal.”

Residents are invited to join the  meeting, which will be held on Zoom tonight at 5:30 p.m. Details can be found on the Commission’s website.
