Letter: Vote for Crowley

March 7, 2024

If you are unhappy with our town government at any level, don’t vote against the override thinking that it will “send a message.”

A vote against the override won’t fix anything about how our town government operates; rather, it will reward us with massive teacher layoffs, fewer first responders, and declining home values.

If you are unhappy with our town government, do use your vote to choose new leadership. This election is not just about giving new candidates a chance, it’s about placing effective people in critical roles. No race exemplifies the need for change more than the one at the top of the ticket: Town Moderator. If you, like me, recognize the need to change the status quo, then join me in voting for Mike Crowley to be our next Town Moderator.

While it’s not the most visible role in town, Town Moderator is one of the most important, with two key responsibilities. First, they conduct Town Meeting, Belmont’s representative legislative body, which  doesn’t reflect Belmont’s demographics. Crowley will help educate residents about the role Town Meeting plays in approving the Town Budget and encourage more residents to run, while flattening the learning curve for new Town Meeting Members.

Second, they appoint essential town committees. Crowley will bring transparency to, and give Town Meeting Members a voice in the appointment process. Warrant Committee terms are three years. If the moderator appoints fresh, qualified people who represent the range of residents in Belmont, the Warrant Committee could play a vital role in addressing fiscal challenges.

At this critical juncture for Belmont, we can’t wait for change. Don’t vote against the override thinking it will bring change; instead, choose new leadership, starting with Mike Crowley as Town Moderator.
