Aurora borealis, the Northern Lights, made another appearance over Belmont this week, and some residents shared their images of the show.

According to the Royal Museums of Greenwich, the lights happen when electrically charged particulars emitted from the sun during a solar storm collide with particles and atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, heating and making them glow. The magnetic poles draw the particles in, concentrating the light activity in the northern and southern hemispheres. The colors are created by different gases in the mix.

Whatever the actual physical cause, it is a fantastic event.
