Belmont High School Sports Wrap (May 20 through May 29)

Boys Track: On Wednesday, May 20, the track team competed at the M-12 Middlesex League Championships. The Marauders placed seventh overall, picking up 49 points and delivering multiple standout performances. Senior Mitchell Woo placed first overall in the men’s pole vault, clearing a height of 13 feet, 6 inches. Sophomore Malcom Were also placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 46 feet, 1 inch, setting a new meet record. Finally, senior captain Gregory Zugman placed fourth in the boys 100-meter with a time of 11.17 seconds, good enough for second on Belmont High School’s all-time list.

Girls Track : On the same day, the girls placed 11th overall in the league championships, with four points. The highlight of the meet was the 4×4 team of Kira van Kelsted, Joana Wolff, Siri Iagnemma, and Valentina Garcia-Joseph, placing seventh overall.

Girls Lacrosse: The girls lacrosse team (13-5, ranked 14th in the state) had a bye week as they prepare to play 19th-ranked Waltham in the first round of the MIAA tournament, on May 27.

Boys Lacrosse: Belmont (10-8) cruised past Arlington Catholic, 13-6, on May 18. Sophomore Max Valenti led the way with multiple goals, while senior James Lemieux scored his first goal of the season. The Marauders then fell to Shawsheen Valley Tech 14-4 on May 20 to finish out the regular season. The tournament is scheduled to start on May 29.

Girls Rugby: The girls rugby team (6-0, ranked 1st in the state) capped off their undefeated season with a 45-0 win over Cambridge Rindge and Latin on May 22. The girls will face fourth-seeded Brookline in their tournament opener. The date is still pending.

Boys Rugby: The boys rugby team (2-3-1) finished their somewhat disappointing season on a high note, crushing Weymouth, 64-10, on May 21. Junior Justin Giroux led the scoring with three tries. Damir Neal, Sam Sullivan, Enzo Passos, Nate Demoura, Trey Clark, Conrad Feldhaus, and Jack Patterson each added one of their own.

Baseball: Belmont (10-10) hosted the annual Brendan Grant Tournament on Memorial Day Weekend. They kicked off the tournament with a 3-0 loss to the Reading Rockets. On May 23, the Marauders topped Burlington, 5-2, to clinch a spot in the preliminary round of the state championships. John Connolly led the offense with three hits.
