Even though Livia Rocha has traveled across the country visiting numerous national parks, she said her favorite nature spot is her own Belmont backyard.
The 8-year-old “loves worms and snails, getting her hands dirty, and spending time observing wildlife and wildflowers,” said her mother, Jaqueline Rocha.
Hoping to gain hands-on experience and learn more about the natural world, the Butler Elementary School third-grader is vying to become the 2026 Jr. Ranger Competition champion. The winner will receive $20,000, appear in Ranger Rick magazine and have a wildlife experience with TV host Jeff Corwin.
This week is critical for Livia, who is currently in second place in the quarterfinals. Online voting for semifinalists ends on Thursday, May 21. If she makes it through, the final round of voting will take place from May 29 to June 4. The official winner will be announced on or before June 19, 2026.
“For Livia, this isn’t just about winning a title. She truly wants to be a Jr. Ranger because of her love for animals, nature, and the outdoors,” said her mother. “This competition reflects who she already is at her core.”
Livia said she loves exotic animals like monkeys, capybaras, and sea turtles, and closer to home she enjoys observing rabbits, beetles, and other creepy-crawlies in her own backyard or on hikes around Belmont. She also revealed that “my mom’s scared of worms.”
This summer, the Rochas are traveling to Hawaii, and Livia said she is looking forward to seeing a real volcano and collecting seashells with detailed patterns.
In addition to her fascination with animals and plants, the 8-year-old thinks it’s important to protect the natural world and not leave behind trash when exploring.
Asked why she loves flora, fauna and hiking so much, Livia replied, “I feel happy” when in nature.
