Letter: Is This a Prudent Policy?

After reading the main article in the Belmont Voice, ‘Board Sets $8.4M Override’ (Feb. 20) as well as a letter titled ‘Pass the Override,’ I sensed the urgency that’s reflected in them about the overall situation the Town of Belmont is facing — possible school closings, drastic cuts to police and fire, delaying badly needed repairs, and more.

I think many of us taxpayers who question the Override wonder why all these things were not taken into consideration when we were asked to approve the new ice skating rink as well as the demolishing and rebuilding of the library. Were these items not in the Select Board’s purview prior to the present issues that now require an override?

We would think that a prudent policy would’ve demanded us to secure the aforementioned ills of the budget excesses prior to deciding to spend millions on ice skating and the library.
