On Monday, July 22, at the Belmont Select Board meeting, member Matt Taylor used his platform to inappropriately denigrate Marie Warner, a nominee for a second term on the Economic Development Committee (EDC). Specifically, he implied that her affiliation with the Citizens for a Fiscally Responsible Belmont (CFRB)—an organization he accused of fostering conspiracies and disinformation—undermined her suitability for service. As chairs of the committees Ms. Warner serves on—both the EDC and Warrant Committee—we think it’s critical to address these accusations and the chilling effect they could have on civic participation.
Mr. Taylor’s assertions that the CFRB’s activities cast a shadow over Ms. Warner’s candidacy not only lack substantiation but also conflict with the values of free speech and diverse opinions that are cornerstones of our democracy. His failure to provide any evidence of Ms. Warner’s alleged malfeasance during the meeting raises serious concerns about his judgment.
The delayed apology from Mr. Taylor, arriving four days after the incident and only after significant community backlash, highlights a concerning hesitation in addressing such serious accusations. While we acknowledge his recent statement, it doesn’t change what he said, nor does it go far enough to assuage our concerns about his leadership ability.
We urge Mr. Taylor to take further steps to demonstrate a genuine commitment to responsible governance. Is Mr. Taylor capable of genuinely caring for all of Belmont’s residents? How does he plan to unite Belmontonians after this divisive episode? We believe Belmont deserves leaders who not only rectify their mistakes promptly but do so with a clear acknowledgment of their missteps.
Belmont deserves better than what we saw at the July 22 meeting. We must ensure that our public discourse promotes inclusion and thoughtful debate, not baseless attacks and divisive rhetoric. We are better than this.
