A few weeks ago, the Belmont LGBTQ+ Alliance put up a banner that read: “Belmont welcomes immigrants, embraces our LGBTQ+ community, and endorses diversity, equity, and inclusion.” The banner was endorsed by nine community organizations, whose logos are displayed. It was a message of belonging — a reminder that Belmont is a place where everyone should feel seen, valued, and safe.
After a complaint, the MBTA decided to take the banner down, calling it “political.” We were disappointed by that decision. For us, the banner wasn’t about politics — it was about people. It was about kindness, respect, and the simple idea that everyone in our town deserves to feel welcome.
We have gotten the banner back and are now looking for a new place to hang it — somewhere it can continue to spread its message of inclusion and hope. Because that message matters. Especially now.
To everyone who felt encouraged or supported by the banner: we want you to know that we’re still here, and we’re still with you. The Belmont LGBTQ+ Alliance will keep working to make our town a more welcoming, affirming place for all.
