We’ve seen an increasing problem with drivers blowing past loading Belmont school buses in the morning. Our two granddaughters are picked up by school buses each day, one by a large bus and one by a small bus/van. The large bus has a red “STOP” sign that swings out from the side when the bus is loading. The van has a sign on the roof that flips up to stand vertically when the bus is loading; both vehicles and their signs have bright flashing red lights. No matter. At least once a week, sometimes twice, a car blows past them while children are loading. The bus drivers tell us the same thing is happening all over Belmont. At some point, there will be a tragedy.
Massachusetts law says you must stop in both directions when the bus lights are flashing, unless on a divided highway with a physical barrier. The penalty for passing a stopped school bus with flashing lights carries a minimum fine of $250 for a first offense. Subsequent offenses can result in fines up to $2,000 and license suspension.
2025 Massachusetts legislation allows for fines to be imposed via school bus cameras. Under that law, cameras can catch violators, and they will be sent a fine of $250 (first), $500 (second), and $1,000 (third and beyond).
Please pay attention on our roads (and get off your phones while driving).
