Baseball

Led by: Jim Brown, 22nd season

Last year’s record and playoff info: Finished 7-13 in the regular season. Did not qualify for the state tournament.

Top returning players: seniors Sean Noone, pitcher/outfield, and Ryan O’Halloran, third base; junior Ryan O’Byrne, first base; sophomore Kyle Ksander, pitcher/outfield

Games to watch – May 11 vs. Reading (rededication of Brendan Grant Field); May 24 vs. Reading

Coach’s comment: Although we are a young team, we look to get back in the tournament after missing the last two years after having an 18-year consecutive appearance streak.”

Softball

Led by: Joe Tuzzolo, 1st season.

Last year’s record and playoff info: 3-1. Did not qualify for the state tournament.

Top returning players: seniors Ellie Espelin, pitcher; Sydney Boulanger, first base; Eva Grant, second base; and juniors Tessa Burroso, shortstop; and Josie Kim, catcher

Games to watch: April 1 vs. Melrose; April 13 vs. Cambridge; May 16 vs. Winchester

Coach’s comment: “We have seven seniors returning from last year’s varsity squad, and they are providing great leadership to the younger players. The kids have been working very hard and are looking to improve on last season’s record. We are very excited to be playing on a new field this season. Clay Pit Field at the High School will be the new home for the varsity softball team, and it is beautiful.”

Boys’ Lacrosse

Led by: Jon Streit, 11th season.

Last year’s record and playoff info: 11-7 in the regular season, the most wins since 2010. Lost to Xaverian in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

Top returning players: Seniors Nate Moss, goalkeeper; Michael and Matthew Pomer, midfield; Liam MacDonald, James Hanley, and Jacob Lubetsky, defense; sophomore Mason Lemack-Bremen, attack.

Games to watch: May 8 vs. Stoneham; May 11 vs. Bedford

Coach’s comment: “The program boasts 15 seniors and 15 freshmen, the most players since 2018, which is to say that not only is Belmont set up to have a very strong season, the future is also very bright with a collection of very talented sophomores and freshmen, many of whom are going to have big impacts on the team this year. The team plays a very exciting and high-tempo brand of lacrosse and is set up to have a very strong spring campaign.”

Girls’ Lacrosse

Led by: Dan O’Brien, 2nd season, 14-6 overall record.

Last year’s record and playoff info: 14-6 overall record. Earned the 27th seed in the MIAA Division 1 Tournament and beat Milford before falling to Longmeadow in the Round of 32. Tourney.

Top returning players: The captains are Tess Desantis (attack), Carly Gaziano (attack), Gretchen Hanley (midfield), Cat Gartland (defense), and Julia Herlihy (goalie). We also return a top scorer in midfielder Niamh Lesnik (sophomore), as well as juniors Anna Santos and Charlotte Mayall. On defense, juniors Keira Healy and Tyler Mayall will be key returners.

Games to watch: April 2 vs. Melrose; April 8 vs. North Andover; May 11 vs. Bedford; May 15 vs. Lexington; May 20 vs. Wilmington

Coach’s comment: “We are really excited about the season, coming off of the success of last year when we set the program record for wins. We have a strong core of returning players and some very talented underclassmen who will be looking to step in and contribute. We have also added a number of really strong opponents to our non-league schedule which I hope will really test us and have us ready to go come tournament time. This program is so much fun to be a part of, the girls are incredible and work so hard. We are working to build connections with the youth program, and I think the future is bright for Belmont Girls’ Lacrosse.”

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Led by: Eric Ahern, 1st year as head coach.

Top returners: senior Austin Lasseter, sprinter and jumper; juniors Alborz Mosharaf, sprinter, grade; Eli Meretta, distance; Ian Hettenbach, distance; Mark Chumack, distance; Jared Rife, distance.

Meets to watch: May 15 Middlesex League championship at Burlington High School

Coach’s comment: “We have a very deep field of distance runners this year and a lot of strong sprinters returning. This is going to be a fun season for all of our competitors!”

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Led by: Melissa Tkacs, coach since 2011.

Top returning runners: Dana Lehr, junior: 800, mile, 2-mile (Division 2 champion in the mile, 3rd in the state in the mile, 11th in the 800 at a meet of champions); Kate Anderson-Strain 200 and 400 (Division 2 qualified for 400 in 2023)

Meets to watch: April 6 vs. Lexington; April 30 vs. Arlington

Coach’s comment: “The girls track team has shown tremendous growth over the past few years. This year’s roster boasts over 90 athletes, 2/3 of whom are freshmen and sophomores. This year’s team is young and eager to learn, and we anticipate a great deal of growth over the season as the team has been working hard at the onset of the season. The indoor track team had multiple qualifiers for the Division 2 Indoor Track Championships and is looking to carry that momentum into the outdoor season. The team is led by four captains this season: Marykate Brady, Kate Anderson-Strain, Francesca Hoerle, and Ava Wright.”

Boys’ Tennis

Led by: David Benson, 3rd season.

Last year’s record and playoff info: Lost to Duxbury in Division 2 quarterfinals.

Top returning players: All returning players played in varsity matches last year, including senior Charlie Osborn and juniors Julian Wong, Henry Moriarty, and Soyam Pokharel. The full lineup is to be determined.

Matches to watch: April 10 vs. Arlington; April 24 vs. Winchester; Mary 14 vs. Lexington

Coach’s comment: “We have a great group of veterans and first-year players. We will miss two highly skilled seniors from last year’s team, but this team boasts a talented and hungry squad. We have high expectations for a strong run going deep into the playoffs. The support of the community is always welcomed at our matches. We encourage our fans and neighbors to stop by the Winn Brook tennis courts throughout the season to cheer on both the BHS boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, where we host our home matches. “

Girls’ Tennis

Led by: Eileen White, coach since 2005. The team has qualified for the state tournament in all but one season.

Last year’s record and playoff info: Finished 10-8 in the regular season. Lost 4-1 in the second round of the MIAA Division 1 tournament to Central Catholic.

Top returning players: Giselle Fond, sophomore, and Joy Son, junior, are expected to factor in at the top singles positions.

Matches to watch: April 8 vs. Reading; April 10 vs. Arlington; May 6 vs. Reading; May 8 vs. Arlington

Coach’s comment: “I am excited about the depth we have and anticipating a lot of competition for varsity spots. We should be contenders in the league this year.”

Boys’ Rugby

Led by: Gregory Bruce, coach since the program’s inception in 2007. Overall record of 110-32.

Last year’s record and playoff info: Finished 10-0 in the regular season and captured the MIAA Division 1 state championship, the program’s fifth all-time and third since joining the MIAA in 2017. The Marauders previously competed in the Massachusetts Youth Rugby Organization.

Top returning players: A strong class of juniors and seniors return. Bruce said, “We have a huge emphasis on community and everyone playing their part within the team, regardless of grade or experience.”

Matches to watch: April 5 vs. Weymouth; May 2 vs. St. John’s Prep; May 9 vs. Lincoln-Sudbury; May 22 vs. BC High

Coach’s comment: “We’re really excited about the upcoming season and our senior and junior leaders have been doing a great job organizing team skills sessions in the off-season and we suspect that should return some great dividends. We are looking at our largest team in the program history with about 90 players currently registered and we can’t wait to get things started with the team this week.”

Girls Rugby

Led by: Kate McCabe, head coach since the team’s founding in 2015. Overall record of 39-4-2

Last year’s record and playoff info: Finished 9-0 and won our fifth consecutive MIAA Division 1 state championship with a dominant 59-0 finish. We’re most proud of our growth defensively, as we finished the season with a point differential of 422-20, a tremendous measure of defensive success. 

Top returning players: We’re returning a powerful class of 2024 – including our top scorers from the 2023 season.  With big contributions from underclassmen as well, we’re looking forward to seeing all our players take the field.

Coach’s comment: With 65 players in the program, including 20 brand new players, we’re always excited to welcome new players to rugby and for the full team to build on past performance and leave their mark for seasons to come.
