League of Women Voters to Host Candidates Night

The League of Women Voters of Belmont will host a candidates night on March 18 at 7 p.m.

The event is fully remote. The evening will begin with a “parade,” introducing Town Meeting member candidates. Speeches and a question-and-answer session for all town-wide candidates will follow.

The annual town election is April 1.

Sidewalk Maintenance Update

Roughly $390,000 remains in the budget for sidewalk repairs, according to Public Works Director Jay Marcotte.

Marcotte told Select Board members that following a slight delay with the consultant due to personal and extenuating circumstances, the town has been able to formalize a plan that focuses on safe routes to school and sidewalks with tree roots that were upheaving certain sections of the sidewalk.

He explained that Town Meeting approved a sidewalk assessment at a recent Town Meeting, and the initial assessment was completed last summer.

“As [Town Administrator Patrice Garvin] said, we did get that $500,000 for capital,” he said. “We also did get some extra money from the Fair Share program. We have been spending that down. So far, to date, we’ve spent about $406,000. What we have remaining between capital, Fair Share, and a couple other line items … is about $309,000 remaining. It’s a dent in what we have to do, but our focus is safe routes to school and specifically tree damaged areas.”

Areas that are addressed will be replaced with asphalt.

LGBTQ+ Alliance to Hang Posters

For the fourth year, the LGBTQ+ Alliance will hang posters at the Town Delta in recognition of Trans Day of Visibility.

Gladys Unger told Select Board members that as many as 30 posters, each with a different prominent trans individual, will be posted.

Transgender Day of Visibility is March 31. The alliance wants to display the posters from March 26 through April 2.
