Belmont Sports Wrap — Week in Review (Sept. 19-Sept. 29)

Boys Soccer – Belmont finished off a challenging stretch of games with a 2-0 loss to Winchester on Saturday, Sept. 27. Earlier, on Sept. 24, the boys lost 2-1 to 14th-ranked Lexington, with the lone goal coming from senior Jake DiOrio, his third of the season. The team is entering a crucial, make-or-break stretch that will determine its playoff prospects. Belmont, at 2-3-5, is currently 10 spots out of playoff position.

Field Hockey – The fourth-ranked Marauders kept on rolling this week, with two big wins, improving their record to 7-1. On Thursday, Sept. 25, the girls beat Lexington 4-2. Scoring was led by senior captain Mackenzie Clarke, junior Gigi Mastrangelo, and sophomores Mia Smith and Kendall Regan. The team hosted a previously undefeated Winchester in an important conference game on Monday, Sept. 29, winning 3-1, courtesy of Regan and Mastrangelo (two goals). Sophomore goalie Zoe Bruce had an excellent game in net. Belmont remains undefeated in the Middlesex League.

Girls Soccer – Neither Belmont team could defeat Lexington last week, as the girls also fell, 1-0, in their match against the third-ranked team in the state. But the Marauders bounced back with a 3-1 win over Winchester, regaining their excellent attacking form behind a goal from senior Nora Goulding and two goals from senior captain Danica Zicha, with both assists coming from sophomore Cassie Greiner. The girls are now ranked sixth in the state.

Girls Volleyball – Belmont split a couple of matches over the past week. On Sept. 25, the girls scored a decisive 3-1 victory over Lexington.. Freshman Emma Miao and juniors Katia Polina and LeeLee Kozelian were instrumental in the win. The girls met a far tougher opponent on Sept. 29, falling to No. 1 Winchester, 3-0. Sophomore Danbi Kim and senior Erin Daley combined for 30 digs on defense. The 6-5 Marauders are currently ranked 23rd in the state, comfortably in the playoff picture.

Golf – The golf team won again this week, beating Arlington Catholic to improve their record to 8-1. The team has already qualified for the Division I North State Sectionals, and with four matches remaining, they aim to secure a Middlesex League title.

Football – The Marauders lost a 14-10 Senior Night heartbreaker on Friday, Sept. 26, against Middlesex League rivals Lexington. Quarterback Casey Regan showcased his throwing ability, connecting with senior Andre Chavusian for a couple of key completions. Regan, a senior captain, also scored a rushing touchdown and added a field goal. The Marauders remain winless, at 0-4.

Cheer – The cheer team also celebrated Senior Night on Sept. 26, recognizing its 12 seniors.

Girls Swimming & Diving – The Marauders’ week was highlighted by an 80-95 win over the reigning MIAA Division 1 Champions, Acton-Boxborough. The girls also beat Arlington 70-95. Sophomores Audrey Bahnsen and Delaney Gutierrez, alongside junior Karen Tao, qualified for sectionals in the 500 freestyle.

Cross Country — Bye week.
