I was surprised to read the Voice’s one-sided report on the town leadership’s decision to drastically reduce yard waste pick-up during the busy summer growing season.
I did not read any comments from the many residents who chose to do their own gardening – or some who may have to do so financially – about the impact of having grass, tree and shrub clippings decomposing month to month on their property during the hottest weeks of the year.
I think this perspective would make an excellent follow-up article. The only residents not impacted are those who use landscaping services. They might not even be aware of the change, which, despite Mr. Rickter’s quote in your July 10 edition, was in no way communicated to town residents. Unless anyone really thinks that town committee minutes, which Mr. Rickter states are available to all, are effective communications! Perhaps he and the Select Board members use professional landscapers and are not impacted? Your article quotes the Town’s recycling coordinator as saying summer may need more pickups, but neither he nor the Voice indicate how the schedule was made. The yard waste barrels on curbs throughout town would suggest a reevaluation and active vs. passive communication are needed.
