Matt Taylor – Candidate for Select Board

Head and shoulders shot
Matt Taylor

I’m running for the open Select Board seat because I love Belmont. My family settled here in 2014, and we have two elementary students. My professional background is in financial software and data science.

Many of our challenges and missed opportunities are rooted in an unsustainable 5% commercial tax base. Belmont has avoided addressing this problem, and now we’re at a crossroads. We must act now: https://www.MattForBelmont.com/vision

As an experienced leader and adviser for startups, I know the power of a big, important goal and a deadline: it focuses our work, unifies efforts, and prioritizes time. Working together, we can bring Belmont to a 10% commercial tax base within 10 years. Along the way, we’ll invest in our core competencies, and keep residents in the loop.

I have a deep understanding of how our town operates. I’m an active and informed Town Meeting member and was appointed to the Warrant Committee for my analytical expertise, broad research into municipal and property data, and passion for connecting with residents. Years ago, I started 02478.org to make our local government more accessible. For example, the Belmont Visual Budget: https://www.02478.org/visb

Together, we will make Belmont a modernizing town that keeps all the best parts of what we love about our community: great schools and services for residents, yet more affordable, safer for walking, with planned capital investments, and ultimately, a reduced tax burden on residents.
