More than five years after receiving its original special permit and two years after receiving its certificate of occupancy, Mint Cannabis on Pleasant Street has yet to open its doors to the public.
It has, however, renewed its state marijuana retailer license with the Cannabis Control Commission, according to the agency. The company received the renewed license at the Jan. 15, 2026, meeting.
At a recent Select Board meeting, Town Administrator Patrice Garvin told Select Board members that a representative from Mint Cannabis, a national cannabis retailer, had contacted her about the company’s plan to transfer its license—one of two allowed in Belmont—to a new owner at the same site.
“What’s new about this is we have laws and rules for liquor licensing, but marijuana retail—there is not much out there. [Select Board Chair Matt Taylor] and I had a conversation with counsel to try and understand what this process is,” Garvin said. “The main question is whether we had time, that there wasn’t a timeline associated with this—so, there is time.”
According to Garvin, the Select Board will eventually have to draft a new host agreement with different terms for a new owner.
“The board has some purview to approve the transfer,” said Select Board Matt Taylor. “We don’t allow liquor license transfers in Belmont… But also, I think we should discuss and review this in the context of public safety and impact, which is the spirit and intent of this whole cannabis licensing.”
