The Messiah sing-along is returning for its second year at Payson Park Church.
“People love the Messiah,” said Music Director Leah Kosch. “I grew up listening to it.”
The event will take place Dec. 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Payson Park Church on Belmont Street.
The Messiah, a liturgical work, was composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel and is most commonly listened to around Christian holidays.
Kosch, who joined the church last fall, said her pastor brought up the idea of a Messiah sing-along, which made her think about a performance she’d seen at The Lilypad in Cambridge.
“I was like, ‘We could totally do that,’” she recalled.
While the original production includes a full orchestra and chorus, the event on Dec. 13 will be a pared-down version, according to Kosch. Featured singers include Julie Wu, Sarah Rose Taylor, Michael Gonzalez, and Raphael Laden-Guindon. Kosch will be on the piano.
“People can bring their own Messiah scores,” she said. “We do provide some for people who do not have the music. … It’s not the whole Messiah. We select choral numbers. We have four soloists who sort of lead the parts. People sing along with the choral section.
Light refreshments will be served.
The event is free, but guests are welcome to offer a donation that will benefit the charities served by the church.
