I feel compelled to write amidst the avalanche of pro-Brownsberger letters to the editor that have been printed in The Belmont Voice. I have been a Belmont resident for 50 years, and in that time, I have repeatedly voted for William Brownsberger. But as a previous letter writer suggested, there is a business-as-usual stalemate at the State House, and Will is a part of that fixture. Furthermore, I was struck by these lines from his own page in The Voice of Friday
July 17 where he says: “I also stood behind six ballot questions raising taxes during my tenure as selectman”!
And Will continues to be a proponent of spending tax dollars. Belmont is already heavily burdened by taxes, with special hardship for seniors on fixed incomes. In contrast to Brownsberger, Lander, in his interview with The Voice, appreciated the financial challenge of remaining in the state, young people are “living with their parents” but equally stressed are “seniors who are on a fixed income and worrying.”
This time round I am going to abandon Will and cast a vote for his challenger who is not proud of a record of raising taxes but concerned about financial security for Massachusetts residents in communities such as Belmont and also able to give much needed fresh voice and youth to the State House.
